„Rajons paplašinājās, tika būvētas jaunas mājas un veikali, bet šo būvju pagrabos un topošās kanalizācijas sistēmas labrintos ar sveci rokās klejoju es – gan vienatnē, gan ar draugiem,” stāsta Džerijs. „Jāteic gan, vienīgais šādu „ekskursiju” rezultāts bija mūždien ar parafīnu un būvgružiem noķēpātās vai saplēstās drēbes. Ja vien neskaita kādu reizi, kad tuvējā veikala pagrabā atklājām mitru, gruzdošu papes kastu kaudzi un noziņojām par to veikala vadītājai; iespējams, novēršot ugunsgrēku.

Beidzās viss brīdī, kad kāds toreizējais klasesbiedrs pamanījās uzrāpties uz topošā lielveikala jumta un izkrist cauri jumta lūkai, gandrīz zaudējot dzīvību. Viņu paglāba tikai zem lūkas piemetinātie stieņi, kas aizturēja kritienu. Pa tuvumā pievienoto kabeli puisis mēģināja nolaisties zemē; kabelis notrūka un rezultātā sagādāja kāpējam rokas lūzumu. Pēc šī gadījuma vecāki sāka mūs daudz rūpīgāk uzraudzīt.”

Ar klejošanu pa būvdarbu vietām nu bija cauri, lai pilnīgi jaunā kvalitātē tā atsāktos pēc apmēram 15 gadiem. Arī zaļās idejas, kas caurvij „UrbanTrip” darbību, Džerijam nav bijušas svešas – pamatskolas laika vidū viņš dibinājis dabas aizsardzības organizāciju, kuras darbība gan nav bijusi sevišķi veiksmīga pieredzes trūkuma dēļ: „Gribēju organizēt ekskursijas un talkas, cilvēki interesējās, taču brīdī, kad vajadzēja kaut ko reāli darīt, piemēram, salasīt tuvējā mežā papīriņus un tukšās pudeles, šī interese atslāba un paliku savos centienos viens. Toreiz vēl nezināju, ka daudziem cilvēkiem patīk tikai pafilozofēt, nevis rīkoties. Tagad, veidojot „UrbanTrip” komandu, cenšos to vienmēr paturēt prātā, meklēt aktīvus rīcības cilvēkus.”

Pirmie pasākumi, ar kuriem atzīmējama „UrbanTrip” kā organizētas kustības dzimšana, notikuši 2004. gada pavasara nogalē. Tobrīd tas viss gan notika neformālu ekskursiju līmenī pa dažādiem cilvēku aizmirstiem objektiem, vienīgais nozīmīgais notikums tovasar bija iepazīšanās ar fotogrāfi Lieni, kura bez Džerija ir vienīgais cilvēks, kas līdz pat šim brīdim nemainīgi ir „UrbanTrip” pamatsastāvā, pārējie tā laika „ekskursanti” izklīduši, kur nu kurš. 2004. gada rudenī „UrbanTrip” savāc jaunu komandu, pilnībā kļūst par fotogrāfu apvienību un ķeras pie nopietnu, sabiedriski nozīmīgu projektu plānošanas, kuru realizācija sākas 2005. gadā.

“The area was enlarged, new houses and shops were built, but I was rambling with a candle in my hand in the cellars and canalization systems,” tells Jerry. “I have to say that the only result of these “excursions” were always torn or dirty clothes, soiled with paraffin and building refuse. If we don’t count one time when in the cellar of some shop we discovered a pile of wet, smoldering carton boxes and informed the management of the shop, in this way probably preventing a fire.”

It all ended in the moment when a classmate made to climb on the roof of the supermarket that was in construction; he fell through the roof trap and almost died. He was saved only by bars that were welded to the trap and held him. Some cable was attached nearby and the guy tried to descend using it; the cable tore off and the climber got a broken arm. After this incident our parents started to look after us much more carefully.”

So the rambling in building areas was over, but it restarted after approximately 15 years in completely different grade. Also the green ideas that permeate the activities of “UrbanTrip” have not been unfamiliar to Jerry – in the middle of school period he founded a nature protection organization whose activity was not quite successful because of the lack of experience: “I wanted to organize excursions and joint works, people were interested in it, but in the moment when it was necessary to really do something, like to collect rubbish in the nearby wood, the interest was gone and I remained alone with my efforts. Those times I didn’t know yet that many people like to talk, not to act. Now, making the “UrbanTrip” team, I always try to keep it in my mind and to search for active people.”

First activities that mark the birth of “UrbanTrip” as an organization, have taken place at the ending of spring 2004. However, at that moment it happened at the level of informal excursions to different abandoned areas and the only remarkable event that summer was that we met the photographer Liene who, except Jerry, is the only person that has remained constantly in the main team of “UrbanTrip”, the other “tourists” of those days are already dispersed. In the autumn of 2004 “UrbanTrip” makes a new team, becomes completely an association of photographers and starts the planning of serious, socially important projects whose realization starts in 2005.
